Juraj Toman (1985) is a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Bratislava (studio of Klaudia Kosziba) and the Academy of Arts in Banská Bystrica, where in 2014 he completed his doctoral studies with prof. Ľudovít Hološka. He has had a considerable number of solo and collective exhibitions at home and abroad.

Juraj Toman's artistic journey explores diverse themes, employing oil painting for spontaneous captures that transcend reality. His works move beyond mere portrayal, incorporating literary elements and navigating through layers of time and content. Toman introduces parallel realities, blending surrealism, postmodernism, and fantastic literature, creating mystifying art that invites viewers to decipher subtle hints, blurring lines between reality and unreality. Shifting focus to urban landscapes, he emphasizes architectural and industrial spaces, using gestural painting to evoke a nostalgic atmosphere. Toman's multilevel understanding of space manifests in paintings with multiple planes, evoking nostalgia and capturing a sense of absence in the present. Through a modern fine-art language with "retro" imagery, the artist portrays emptied town streets and "non-existent places." In his evolution, Toman reintegrates the figure into its spatial field, the artist's studio thus undergoes a retro-modernist update, repainting exterior scenes to represent nocturnal conversations between friends and collaborators.
